Donnie Wahlberg has finally broken his silence on Boston Blue’s controversial decision to recast his on-screen son from Blue Bloods.
Calling it “a very layered conversation,” Wahlberg revealed he personally called Andrew Terraciano before the decision was finalized. Terraciano, who played Sean Reagan for years, responded with “grace and class,” even offering to help find the right replacement. Wahlberg said they even joked about Andrew returning in a completely different role.
The recast became clear when Boston Blue premiered in October 2025, with Sean — now played by Mika Amonsen — appearing after his character was hospitalized. Wahlberg admitted the change wasn’t easy.
“It was a difficult decision — and one that made me uncertain about doing the show,” he said. “How do we continue with a different Sean?”
He praised Amonsen for stepping into the role respectfully, noting that both actors handled the transition with maturity and professionalism.
Addressing mixed fan reactions, Wahlberg made it clear how much Blue Bloods meant to him. “Nobody was more disappointed than me that it ended. I fought tooth and nail to save it,” he shared, adding that he’s now putting that same passion into the spinoff.
Wahlberg also teased possible future callbacks — including a potential cameo from Tony Terraciano, who originally played Jack Reagan and is now a real-life surgeon.
“We’re always looking for ways to keep Blue Bloods alive in this show,” Wahlberg said. “I’m open to whatever that might lead to.”
