CBS’ NCIS: Origins is heading into Season 3 with strong momentum — but it will be doing so without one of the creative leaders who helped bring the prequel to life. Co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal is set to depart the series at the conclusion of Season 2, despite the show’s recent early renewal.
A longtime veteran of the NCIS franchise, Monreal spent ten years writing and producing on the original series before stepping away in 2021 to work on projects such as Hulu’s Paradise and Netflix’s Griselda. She later returned to co-create NCIS: Origins alongside fellow franchise alum David J. North.
Moving forward, North will remain on board as the sole showrunner for Season 3. CBS has praised Monreal’s impact on the series, noting that the foundation she helped establish will continue to guide the story as it delves into the early years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
