Even the most devoted fans of NCIS weren’t ready for what the 500th episode delivered. Instead of a celebration, it turned into an emotional farewell, as viewers were left shocked by the unexpected exit of Director Leon Vance, played for 18 seasons by Rocky Carroll.
The twist comes late in the episode, when Vance realizes the mysterious light shining through the office doors isn’t from elevator construction — it’s something far more final. In a haunting moment, the late Ducky, portrayed by Adam Campbell, appears to guide him into the afterlife.
Showrunner Steven D. Binder explained that this storyline had been considered for years, and choosing the milestone 500th episode for Vance’s departure was a difficult decision. He also reflected on the show’s long history of major character exits, admitting there are some past deaths he still regrets.
Still, this may not be the last time fans see Vance. Like many characters before him, he could return in flashbacks or spiritual appearances. Meanwhile, Carroll isn’t leaving the show entirely — he will continue working behind the scenes as a director and has already returned to direct an upcoming episode.
