Will Rizzoli & Isles Return for Season 8? Here’s What We Know
Warning: Major spoilers ahead for all seasons of Rizzoli & Isles.
For seven unforgettable seasons, Boston Homicide Detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander) became one of television’s most beloved crime-solving duos. Combining Jane’s sharp investigative instincts with Maura’s brilliant forensic mind, the pair solved some of Boston’s most challenging murder cases while proving that strong female characters could lead a hit crime drama.
Based on Tess Gerritsen’s bestselling mystery novels, Rizzoli & Isles became a major success for TNT, running for seven seasons and earning a passionate fan base. The series delivered 105 episodes filled with suspense, humor, friendship, and unforgettable moments between its two leading characters.
Although the show officially ended on September 5, 2016, it has recently experienced a major resurgence thanks to streaming platforms. With the complete series becoming available on services like Peacock and Netflix, a new generation of viewers has discovered Jane and Maura’s unique friendship, leading many longtime fans to once again ask the same question:
Could Rizzoli & Isles finally return for Season 8?
How Did Rizzoli & Isles End?
The series finale, titled “Ocean Frank,” focused on the future of the main characters as they prepared to move on from their careers at the Boston Police Department.
Before saying goodbye, Jane and Maura solved one final murder case involving a man found handcuffed to his bed. After uncovering the truth behind the mystery, the episode gave fans emotional updates on everyone’s next chapter.
Jane accepted a new position as an instructor at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, while Maura planned a temporary move to Paris to finish writing her novel.
However, the finale saved one last surprise for fans. When Maura prepared for her trip, Jane revealed that she had used her remaining vacation days so she could join her best friend in France. The show ended with the two women playfully arguing on Maura’s bed — a touching callback to the very first episode of the series.
Meanwhile, Vince Korsak (Bruce McGill) officially retired after 32 years on the force, signing off with the radio code “Victor 981, Ocean Frank.” Frankie Rizzoli (Jordan Bridges) was promoted and took over Korsak’s former position, while Frankie and Nina’s (Idara Victor) secret engagement was revealed through Kent’s farewell video for Jane.
Will There Be a Season 8 of Rizzoli & Isles?
At this time, a Season 8 revival has not been officially announced.
When the series ended in 2016, Turner Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Reilly explained that the decision came because the show had reached a natural conclusion.
Reilly said that both Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander had enjoyed their time on the series, but it simply felt like the right moment to end the story.
Nearly a decade later, the cast and creators continue to speak fondly of the series, but there are currently no confirmed plans for a new season, reboot, or reunion movie.
However, the renewed popularity on streaming platforms has given fans new hope. With millions of viewers rediscovering the friendship between Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles, calls for a revival have grown louder.
For now, Rizzoli & Isles remains a completed seven-season series — but its return may depend on whether the renewed fan interest convinces studios that there is still a story worth telling.
