NCIS: Tony & Ziva has just premiered its first three episodes on Paramount+, but the new series is already part of a much larger legacy. The original NCIS show — where Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo first introduced Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David — is heading into its 23rd season, and both stars say they feel incredibly fortunate to still be part of the franchise.
De Pablo shared that returning to the characters felt like a dream come true. She explained that making the first season was an amazing experience and that she and Weatherly mainly wanted to give something back to the fans who loved Tony and Ziva for so many years. According to her, the show came together beautifully under showrunner John McNamara, with Europe providing a stunning backdrop that almost feels like a character of its own in the story.
While the future of the series is uncertain, de Pablo said she would happily return if given the chance. For now, she’s simply grateful the project happened at all.
Weatherly recalled how the experience brought back memories from their early days on NCIS, including a running joke he shared with de Pablo and Sean Murray, who plays Timothy McGee. During the many crime-scene shoots — complete with gloves, jackets, and gear — one of them would jokingly ask the others, “How many more seasons you got?” The question would always send them into laughter.
De Pablo noted that the original show often produced 24 episodes a season, which meant nearly 10 months of nonstop work. She admitted the schedule was exhausting, especially with very little sleep, but the cast loved being there and laughed together every day.
Weatherly also remembered one of Gibbs’ famous lines — “Grab your gear.”
De Pablo said Mark Harmon, who played Gibbs, often reminded the cast how rare their experience was. She now realizes how true that was, describing their time on the original series as a “golden era.” She added that filming Tony & Ziva felt just as magical, saying she often had to pinch herself because she couldn’t believe they were once again bringing those characters to life together.
Showrunner John McNamara, however, is cautious about thinking too far ahead. For now, his focus is simply finishing the first season and making it the best it can be. Ultimately, he said, the future of the series will depend on the fans, Paramount+, and the networks behind the franchise.
For now, the team is just happy that Tony and Ziva’s story continues.
