Early in Season 19, NCIS marked the end of an era by saying goodbye to Mark Harmon’s iconic Leroy Jethro Gibbs. After nearly two decades on television’s most-watched drama, Harmon—then 70—stepped away in October, having appeared in more than 400 episodes since the show’s 2003 debut. While fans still hope for a return, there is no guarantee Gibbs will ever step back into the bullpen.

Leroy Jethro Gibbs Still Looms Large on NCIS
Gibbs’ farewell came in Season 19, Episode 4, “Great Wide Open,” when he chose a quiet life in Alaska after sharing a final moment with McGee (Sean Murray) and the team. Though physically absent, Gibbs remains a cornerstone of the series. Mark Harmon continues to appear in the opening credits, and Gibbs is still the first character introduced at the start of each episode.
His name also lives on in dialogue. Most recently, he was referenced in the winter premiere, “Pledge of Allegiance,” reinforcing his lasting influence on the team.
The Secret Gibbs Kept for Years
That same episode revealed a touching secret. Director Vance (Rocky Carroll) disclosed that Gibbs had deposited $10,000 into accounts for McGee and Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen).
“Welcome to the Leroy Jethro Gibbs College Scholarship Club,” Vance explained, noting that the fund was created in honor of Gibbs’ late daughter, Kelly. Gibbs quietly continued contributing to the fund long after her death, helping support the families of fallen agents over the years—a powerful reflection of the character’s quiet compassion.
What It Was Like Working With Mark Harmon
Off-screen, Harmon’s impact mirrors Gibbs’ on-screen leadership. Widely respected as both the show’s star and an executive producer, Harmon has long been described by his co-stars as a mentor and guiding force.
Sean Murray, who has worked alongside Harmon since the series began, has frequently spoken about Harmon’s influence. He has recalled first meeting Harmon years earlier on Harts of the West, when Murray was still a teenager. Even then, Harmon made a lasting impression—one that evolved into a mentorship when they reunited on NCIS nearly a decade later.
Praise From the NCIS Family
Cote de Pablo, who portrayed Ziva David from Seasons 3 through 11, has described Harmon as both a close friend and a father figure, saying their bond was “forged in fire.” Michael Weatherly, who played Tony DiNozzo, has echoed those sentiments, praising Harmon’s honesty, warmth, and down-to-earth presence on set.
Harmon’s wife, actress Pam Dawber, has also shared insight into his work ethic, emphasizing his commitment to doing what’s best for the cast, crew, and show—without ego or pretense.
A Legacy That Endures
Though Leroy Jethro Gibbs may no longer be leading the team, his influence—like Mark Harmon’s—continues to shape NCIS. From storylines rooted in his values to the respect he earned behind the scenes, Gibbs remains woven into the DNA of the series.
And for fans, that legacy may be the closest thing to having him back.
