Blue Bloods may have run for 14 seasons, but one storyline Tom Selleck wishes had been explored more was Frank Reagan’s romantic side.
In an interview with TV Insider, Selleck admitted he never wanted the show to end — and revealed one lingering regret. He would have liked to see Frank flirt a little more. While many fans hoped the widowed commissioner might eventually find love again, Selleck explained that the series format didn’t really allow for it.
According to him, Frank was never truly ready to move on from his late wife — which is why he continued wearing his wedding ring. Still, Selleck believes that didn’t mean the character couldn’t have enjoyed more lighthearted romantic moments. Although Frank had a few brief connections over the years, they were rare, as the show largely focused on police work and the Reagan family dinners that became its trademark.
Showrunner Kevin Wade also addressed the issue, explaining that the creative team prioritized strong commissioner-centered storylines over dating plots. While they experimented with romance a few times, it was never a major focus.
Selleck has previously said he isn’t ready to say goodbye to Blue Bloods for good — meaning if CBS ever revives the series, fans might finally see Frank Reagan explore the romantic side that was left untapped.
