Donnie Wahlberg Admits Filming Boston Blue in His Hometown Isn’t Easy
Donnie Wahlberg is discovering that shooting a TV series in your own hometown comes with unexpected challenges. The actor has reprised his iconic role as Danny Reagan in the Boston Blue spin-off, which follows the character’s move from New York City to Boston.
While the setting is close to home, filming there hasn’t been smooth. During an appearance on LIVE with Kelly and Mark, Wahlberg revealed just how chaotic things can get on set.
“We don’t get anything shot,” he joked. “Every take I’m trying to say my lines, and people are shouting, ‘Donnie! Donnie!’”
He also shared a funny detail about Boston’s famous duck boat tours, which often pass by filming locations. Tour guides, using loudspeakers, sometimes point him out mid-scene, turning serious moments into distractions.
Born and raised in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, Wahlberg comes from a large family, including his brother Mark Wahlberg. His deep connection to the city makes the experience special—but also unpredictable.
Wahlberg originally began playing Danny Reagan back in 2010 on Blue Bloods, alongside Tom Selleck. Although the long-running series ended in 2024, he’s remained passionate about continuing the character’s story.
“I love Blue Bloods,” he previously said, explaining how important it was for him to keep Danny Reagan alive through the spin-off.
Off-screen, Wahlberg has been married to Jenny McCarthy since 2014 and continues to stay busy with multiple projects. Despite the hectic schedule, he says he’s grateful for the opportunity.
“I want to work harder and be worthy of the love fans give me,” he shared emotionally.
In Boston Blue, he stars alongside Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays his new partner Lena Silver, as well as a strong supporting cast.
Even with the challenges, Wahlberg remains optimistic: if fans embrace the show, he knows the effort will have been worth it.
