Blue Bloods may have ended, but its story isn’t over. CBS is officially expanding the franchise with Boston Blue, a new spinoff that keeps Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan at the center of the action — this time in a brand-new city.
The upcoming series follows Danny as he leaves New York behind and relocates to Boston, stepping away from the Reagan family’s familiar world of law enforcement and into an entirely new department. The move puts him on unfamiliar ground, both professionally and personally, without the daily support of Frank, Erin, and the rest of his family.
The show is executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg, with Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis serving as showrunners.
What the story will focus on
In Boston Blue, Danny partners with detective Lena Peters, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, who also comes from a prominent law-enforcement family. The series is expected to explore how Danny adapts to a new city, new politics, and new cases — while still carrying the instincts that made him a standout in the NYPD.
Family dynamics will remain a core theme, just as they were in Blue Bloods. The show will also likely explore Danny’s personal life, including whether he’s finally ready to move forward romantically after the loss of his wife.
Cast and returning connections
So far, Wahlberg is the only confirmed returning cast member from Blue Bloods, though the project has been described as a “universe expansion,” leaving the door open for guest appearances from familiar faces.
New additions include Maggie Lawson, Ernie Hudson, and Gloria Reuben, who will play key figures within Boston’s law enforcement community and Lena’s extended family — reinforcing the franchise’s tradition of blending policing with family dynamics.
What Donnie Wahlberg has said
Wahlberg has teased the project as the next chapter of the Blue Bloods legacy, promising surprises and unresolved storylines carried into the new series. He’s also hinted that Danny won’t be completely cut off from his roots, suggesting possible visits or connections to characters from the original show.
When it premieres
CBS has confirmed that Boston Blue is set for the 2025–2026 broadcast season, with a planned fall debut.
For longtime fans, the spinoff offers both closure and a fresh start — continuing Danny Reagan’s story while opening the door to a new city, new relationships, and a new era for the Blue Bloods universe.
