NCIS is now one of CBS’s biggest television franchises, but its success was built over time — and not by CBS alone.
Executive producer Mark Horowitz revealed that the real breakthrough came when USA Network began airing nonstop reruns of both JAG and NCIS after their third seasons. The added exposure introduced the show to a wider audience and helped boost its live ratings on CBS.
Co-creator Donald P. Bellisario later said he didn’t immediately grasp how massive the series had become, while star Mark Harmon recalled the long hours and early growing pains, emphasizing that the show’s success developed gradually.
Now in its 23rd season, NCIS continues to grow through multiple spin-offs, securing its legacy as one of television’s most enduring franchises.
