The Truth Behind the Blue Bloods Dinner Scenes — Donnie Wahlberg Was the Only One Really Eating
The iconic Reagan family dinners on Blue Bloods looked warm, natural, and authentic — and for Donnie Wahlberg, they actually were.
While most actors only pretended to eat, Wahlberg fully committed to the meals while playing Danny Reagan.
> “Danny probably eats the most because Donnie’s the hungriest,” he joked, explaining that talking with a full mouth helped capture Danny’s chaotic personality.

Eating Was Part of the Character
Wahlberg believed Danny was a “bull in a china shop,” so constantly chewing, interrupting, and talking over people made the performance feel real.
There was only one exception:
If he had a New Kids on the Block concert coming up, he stuck to vegetables. Otherwise, he happily devoured the main dishes and desserts — sometimes even getting sugar rushes during filming.

The Rest of the Cast Had Tricks
Not everyone shared his appetite.
Tom Selleck avoided speaking with food in his mouth, while Bridget Moynahan used a clever illusion — constantly mashing her food so it looked like she was eating.
Selleck admitted the cast all had small techniques:
Buttering rolls
Moving food around the plate
Cutting without swallowing
The audience never noticed.

A Perfect Goodbye
When Blue Bloods ended after Season 14, Wahlberg kept a piece of history — the actual Reagan dinner table.
Fittingly, it now lives inside his family’s Wahlburgers restaurants… the same table where he spent years eating most of the food on set.
