Linda Hunt, widely recognized for her role as Operations Manager Hetty Lange in NCIS: Los Angeles, is an acclaimed American actress with a long and diverse career in theater, film, television, and voice acting.
Born on April 2, 1945, in Morristown, New Jersey, she is the daughter of Raymond Davy Hunt, a vice president at Harper Fuel Oil, and Elsie Doying Hunt, a piano teacher who also worked as a music instructor and choir singer in Westport, Connecticut. Linda grew up in Westport alongside her older sister, Marcia.
She studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy and later graduated from the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago (now part of DePaul University). Before transitioning to screen work, she built a strong foundation in theater.
Hunt made her Broadway debut in 1975 in Ah, Wilderness and later earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in End of the World (1984). Her Off-Broadway work includes productions such as Top Girls, A Metamorphosis in Miniature, Aunt Dan and Lemon, Doubt, and Mother Courage and Her Children.
Her film debut came in 1980 with Popeye, followed by a breakthrough role in The Year of Living Dangerously (1982), where she portrayed Billy Kwan—a performance that earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1983, making her the first person to win an Oscar for playing a character of the opposite gender. She later appeared in films including Dune (1984), She-Devil (1989), and Kindergarten Cop (1990).
On television, Hunt has appeared in series such as The Practice, Without a Trace, and NCIS: Los Angeles, where she is best known for playing Henrietta “Hetty” Lange. She is also recognized for her distinctive voice work, including roles as Grandmother Willow in Pocahontas and narration in the God of War video game series.
Hunt has spoken openly about being diagnosed with hypopituitary dwarfism during her teenage years, standing at 4 feet 9 inches tall. She has described facing bullying during her school years but credits her family’s strong support for helping her overcome those challenges.
On a personal level, Hunt has been in a long-term relationship with psychotherapist Karen Kline since 1978. The couple married in 2008 and have shared their life together for decades, living in a renovated 1919 Hollywood Craftsman bungalow in Los Angeles. They do not have children but share a home filled with pets, particularly dogs.
In interviews, Hunt has described their home as warm and inviting, emphasizing its “playfulness and elegance,” reflecting the personal and relaxed lifestyle she values outside of her acting career.
