Mark Harmon is officially set to make a full-time return to the NCIS universe, reprising his iconic role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs throughout the entire third season of NCIS: Origins during the 2026–27 television season.
CBS confirmed the news with a post on Instagram, announcing: “The story he never told enters a new chapter… Mark Harmon will return to NCIS: Origins as Gibbs for all episodes of Season 3.”
According to the network, Harmon’s Gibbs will be at the center of a present-day mystery connected to his time at Camp Pendleton in the 1990s. The action-packed storyline will unfold across all 10 episodes of the upcoming season.
In addition to returning on screen, Harmon continues to serve as the narrator and executive producer of NCIS: Origins. Although Season 3 has been shortened to 10 episodes, he will appear in every installment, marking a major new chapter for the beloved character.
Harmon last appeared in NCIS: Origins in November 2025 during a crossover event with the flagship NCIS series, where viewers learned that Gibbs was still living in Alaska with a canine companion. He also made a brief appearance in the show’s premiere episode.
The actor first introduced Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the 2003 backdoor pilot for NCIS, which aired as a two-part episode of JAG. He remained the face of the franchise for nearly two decades before departing the original series in Episode 4 of NCIS Season 19.
In NCIS: Origins, the younger version of Gibbs is portrayed by Austin Stowell, alongside a cast that includes Kyle Schmid, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, Diany Rodriguez, and Caleb Foote.
Season 3 of NCIS: Origins is scheduled to premiere this fall in its new Tuesday night time slot at 10 p.m. ET/PT, with Mark Harmon playing a central role in every episode.
