When NCIS returns for Season 23, fans can expect a major twist that pays tribute to one of the show’s most beloved — yet often overlooked — characters. Over its 22-year run, the series has introduced many fan favorites, but some have not always received the spotlight they deserve. That’s finally about to change.
Season 23 will pick up right after the dramatic finale, with Alden Parker struggling to cope with his father’s death. While the team tries to support him, Parker’s emotional state — and possible desire for revenge — will play a key role in the upcoming episodes. However, his storyline won’t be the only one grabbing attention this season.
In an exciting reveal, one episode will focus entirely on Jimmy Palmer, played by Brian Dietzen. The episode will follow a “day in the life” format, giving viewers a closer look at the chief medical examiner’s world. This concept mirrors Season 10, Episode 16 (“Detour”), which centered on Jimmy and Ducky during a memorable kidnapping storyline.
Now, 12 years later, NCIS is bringing back that unique storytelling style — this time putting Jimmy front and center. While it’s unclear if the new episode will echo the same kind of danger, it will offer a fresh perspective on his character. Reports suggest the episode could even be written by Dietzen himself.
Executive producer Steven D. Binder described it as experiencing “the world through Jimmy’s eyes,” meaning the episode could either follow a case from his perspective or dive deeper into his personal story.
Jimmy truly deserves this spotlight. Introduced in Season 1 as a medical examiner’s assistant, he has grown into a central figure as the team’s chief medical examiner. Once known mainly for comic relief, Jimmy has evolved into a more complex and respected character — while still keeping his charm.
Given his long journey, character development, and connection with fans, it’s only fitting that Season 23 dedicates a special episode to him.
NCIS Season 23 premieres Tuesday, October 14 at 8 PM ET on CBS, followed by NCIS: Origins Season 2 and NCIS: Sydney Season 3 later that night.
