After 18 years portraying NCIS Director Leon Vance, Rocky Carroll exited the long-running series in a dramatic storyline during the show’s 500th episode — a moment that left many fans stunned.
Carroll admitted he wasn’t initially told that his character would be killed off. When producers eventually revealed the plan, he said he was surprised, but ultimately came to appreciate the creative impact of the decision. Vance’s sacrifice — giving his life to protect the agency and expose corruption — provided rare closure for a character who had become central to the series over two decades.
Watching the episode at a public screening, Carroll said he experienced it much like any other viewer. His biggest concern was whether the episode would land emotionally and narratively, but he ultimately described it as a powerful and well-executed installment.
When Vance first appeared in Season 5 of NCIS, the character was not immediately embraced by fans. He was introduced as a strict authority figure and an outsider stepping into an established team. Over time, however, the writing evolved, and deeper storylines—especially those involving his personal life and the loss of his wife—helped audiences connect with him, turning Vance into a key member of the NCIS family.
Carroll also revealed that discussions about killing off Vance had taken place years earlier, but were repeatedly postponed as the character became more integral, particularly due to his strong dynamic with Mark Harmon’s Gibbs.
Despite Vance’s on-screen death, Carroll isn’t leaving the franchise entirely. He has been directing episodes since 2015 and continues to work behind the camera, including recent installments featuring returning characters like Ellie Bishop. He’s also been invited back to direct again, and hinted that Vance could still appear in flashbacks or legacy storylines.
Looking ahead, Carroll says he is open to new opportunities but not rushing into another long-term role. After nearly two decades in the series, he is considering focusing more on directing or taking time to explore new creative projects.
While Vance’s story has come to an end, Carroll believes the character’s legacy will continue to resonate within the NCIS universe for years to come.
