Boston Blue Premiere Recap: Danny Reagan’s New Life in Beantown
Fans of Blue Bloods got a first look at the franchise’s new spinoff, Boston Blue, following the story of detective Donnie Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg). After a serious injury to his younger son Sean (now played by Mika Amonsen), Danny relocates to Boston, stepping into a new law enforcement family while adjusting to life outside New York.
One secret kept under wraps in the pilot? Danny and his longtime NYPD partner, Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), are now romantic partners—a development teased since their last NYPD pizza outing. Early in the premiere, the show even gives a cheeky nod to their relationship, showing Danny shirtless in a playful, intimate scene. Ramirez joked about the costume being “too obvious” but was game to explore their dynamic.
Despite mixed fan reactions over the years, Ramirez says audiences “on the street” are rooting for the couple. Executive producer Brandon Sonnier adds, “It was important to show them together before Danny left New York, so fans could see their story continue in Boston.” Wahlberg personally invited Ramirez to reprise her role, highlighting his generosity and commitment to character continuity.
Boston Blue also features familiar faces from Blue Bloods: ADA Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) shows up to support Danny and Sean, keeping the larger Reagan universe connected. Sean has matured into his role in the Boston Police Department, and the series immediately immerses viewers in his new life.
Danny quickly becomes involved in a local arson case that injured Sean, partnering with Boston detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green). With support from Boston police superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), Danny officially joins the investigation, showing that his New York detective skills translate well to Beantown.
Like its predecessor, Boston Blue blends faith, family, and tradition. The first episode features a Shabbat dinner at Lena’s family home, echoing the Reagans’ iconic Sunday meals, with plenty of humor, debate, and family dynamics.
Danny’s closing declaration—he’ll stay in Boston as long as his son needs him—sets the stage for future storylines. Next week, expect a Ponzi scheme investigation that will showcase teamwork between Danny and Lena, while rookie cops Sean and Jonah (Marcus Scribner) face their first day on the job.
