Donnie Wahlberg has opened up about why Boston Blue is filming mostly in Toronto instead of Boston, following fan backlash over the location.
In a recent interview, the New Kids on the Block star explained that financial struggles in the TV industry—especially after COVID and recent strikes—made filming in Canada far more affordable. Still, he reassured fans that Boston hasn’t been left out, with parts of the show already filmed in the city, including scenes at Fenway Park.
Wahlberg emphasized that shooting in Toronto is a compromise to get the show made, with plans to continue filming exterior scenes in Boston whenever possible. He also revealed that he pushed hard to keep the show connected to the city, even ensuring his character stays true to Boston roots.
Despite the controversy, Wahlberg teased that the series premiere will “blow people’s minds,” hinting at major surprises and guest appearances—including familiar faces from Blue Bloods.
The goal, he says, is simple: honor the original while expanding the story—and, if the show succeeds, eventually bring even more filming back to Boston.
