Fans of NCIS have puzzled over one question for years: how does Gibbs get his boats out of the basement? Now, the show has finally revealed the answer.
Gibbs Leaves NCIS
It was a moment many fans knew was coming, but few expected it so early. After more than 25 years of service, Leroy Jethro Gibbs decided to step away from NCIS.
Following the tragic loss of his wife and daughter, Gibbs had thrown himself into his work, treating his team as family. But during Season 19, Episode 2 (“Nearly Departed”), Tobias Fornell questions why Gibbs continues chasing dangerous cases.
“You always find a way to justify staying in the chase,” Fornell tells him. Still, Gibbs insists it’s just part of the job.
However, everything changes in Season 19, Episode 4 (“Great Wide Open”), when Gibbs finally chooses to move on. After saying goodbye to his team, he heads to Alaska, ready to start a new chapter.
The Basement Boat Mystery Solved
For years, fans wondered how Gibbs managed to remove the boats he built in his basement. The answer is surprisingly simple: he breaks through the wall.
Alden Parker (played by Gary Cole) discovers a large hole in the basement wall while searching for Gibbs. Later, Dr. Donald Mallard (“Ducky,” played by David McCallum) also notices it and jokes about the renovation.
Fans Were Right All Along
On the way to the airport, Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) tells Gibbs that fans have long been obsessed with this mystery.
He recalls hearing wild theories—everything from secret pulley systems to hidden tunnels under the house. Gibbs, surprised, simply responds, “How else was I supposed to get that thing out?”
With that, one of NCIS’s longest-running mysteries is finally solved—though fans may never see Gibbs build another boat again.
