Boston Blue may be heading straight into fan backlash after shaking up one of Blue Bloods’ most loved couples.
In the April 17 episode of the Boston Blue, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) reunites with his girlfriend Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) during a case — but something feels off. It’s later revealed that Maria is dealing with her mother’s declining health following a Parkinson’s diagnosis, leading her to put their relationship on hold, surprising both Danny and viewers.
Speaking at CBS Fest, Wahlberg explained that Maria is going through a crisis and isn’t sure how to move forward, while Danny — true to character — isn’t ready to give up without a fight. Despite the emotional twist, he encouraged fans to stay hopeful about a possible reunion.
His co-star Sonequa Martin-Green also shared her support for the couple, saying she’d love to see them back together and praising their chemistry on screen. According to Wahlberg, the storyline is designed to unfold gradually, stretching out Danny and Maria’s journey rather than resolving it quickly.
Reflecting on classic soap opera storytelling, Wahlberg compared the situation to iconic moments from General Hospital and All My Children, noting that dramatic separations often lead to powerful reunions later on.
Elsewhere in the episode, there’s a contrast in tone as Sarah (Maggie Lawson) experiences a joyful moment when Seth (Mike Vogel) proposes — just as Danny and Maria’s relationship hits a breaking point. Lawson highlighted how the show reflects real life, where moments of happiness and heartbreak often happen side by side.
While some cast members remain optimistic about Danny and Maria’s future, others are more skeptical — but one thing is clear: fans are already emotionally invested.
Boston Blue airs Fridays on CBS, with new episodes streaming the next day on Paramount+.
