Donnie Wahlberg has opened up about the high production costs behind Blue Bloods and how they ultimately led to difficult financial decisions for the cast before the show ended.
Speaking on The George Janko Show podcast, Wahlberg revealed that before the final season of Blue Bloods, the cast was asked to accept a 25% pay cut or risk the series being canceled.
According to him, reactions were mixed. Some actors refused, while others agreed in order to keep the show alive. Wahlberg said he even tried to negotiate a different approach, suggesting a smaller pay cut in exchange for multiple additional seasons, believing it would be better to keep the series going at a reduced rate than to end it entirely.
Despite those efforts, Blue Bloods concluded after 14 seasons on CBS. Wahlberg noted that the industry itself has changed significantly, with rising production costs and the disappearance of traditional pilot seasons making long-running network dramas harder to sustain.
The series, which premiered in 2010, built a loyal fanbase around the Reagan family, led by Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan, alongside Wahlberg’s Danny, Erin (Bridget Moynahan), and Jamie (Will Estes). Its finale in December 2024 marked the end of an era for viewers who weren’t ready to say goodbye.
Wahlberg said he was deeply affected by the show’s ending, describing how hard he fought to save it and how emotional the farewell was to both the cast and crew. He explained that he had to emotionally prepare for the possibility that Danny Reagan’s story was over before eventually transitioning into the spinoff Boston Blue.
He added that moving forward wasn’t immediate or easy, but working on the new pilot helped him find a way to continue Danny’s journey in a new setting while keeping the character’s core identity intact.
Boston Blue now continues the story on CBS, airing Fridays at 10 p.m. ET, with episodes streaming on Paramount+ the following day.
