Why Gibbs Didn’t Appear in NCIS Season 21’s Tribute to Ducky
Following the death of beloved actor David McCallum in 2023, NCIS dedicated the Season 21 episode “The Stories We Leave Behind” to honoring his iconic character, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. While many familiar faces returned to pay tribute, fans were surprised that Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon, was absent.
According to co-showrunner Steven D. Binder, the decision was intentional. After Harmon left the series in 2021, the producers felt that bringing Gibbs back for only a brief appearance would not do justice to such an important character. Binder explained that if Harmon ever returns, it should be for a meaningful storyline rather than a short cameo.
Although Gibbs did not appear on screen, the episode acknowledged his presence. Early in the story, Timothy McGee receives a letter from Gibbs containing a touching photo of Gibbs, McGee, and Ducky, showing that he still remains connected to his former team.
Instead of Gibbs, the episode featured a surprise return from Michael Weatherly as Tony DiNozzo. Appearing for the first time since Season 13, DiNozzo delivered heartfelt words about Ducky and brought a touch of humor during the emotional farewell. The show’s creators felt Tony was the perfect choice because of his connection to Jimmy Palmer, who played a central role in the tribute episode.
While Gibbs was missed, the episode ensured his friendship with Ducky was still honored in a meaningful way.
